Reshoring and Nearshoring Injection Molding to Arizona
A US-side alternative to Mexico and Asia, 180 miles from the Nogales crossing. Legacy Molding takes over programs and tools from overseas and cross-border molders, prices them on landed cost rather than piece price, and restarts production in Phoenix in weeks. No tariff exposure, no ocean transit, no IMMEX paperwork, and a plant you can visit tomorrow.

Landed cost, not piece price
Piece price is one line of eight. Download the worksheet and run your own numbers.
| Cost line | Overseas (Asia) | Mexico (maquila) | Phoenix (Legacy) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Piece price | Lowest | Low | Competitive at volume with multi-cavity tooling |
| Tooling | Low, often not owned or exportable | Moderate | Moderate; you own it and it stays in the US |
| Freight | Ocean 4 to 8 weeks plus drayage | Truck 1 to 3 days plus border crossing | Truck, same day to 2 days across the Southwest |
| Duty and tariff | Section 301 and reciprocal tariffs, changing | USMCA rules of origin, IMMEX compliance | None |
| Inventory carrying | 8 to 16 weeks of pipeline stock | 3 to 6 weeks | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Quality travel and risk | Audits by plane; rework after transit | Drive to the border; language and customs delays | Twenty minutes to a day; same-day disposition |
| IP and ITAR | Limited protection; no ITAR | Foreign facility; ITAR restrictions | US law; export-controlled programs supported |
| Lead time, order to dock | 8 to 16 weeks | 4 to 8 weeks | 2 to 6 weeks |

Arizona vs Mexico for nearshored molding
Nearshoring to Sonora or Chihuahua cuts the ocean out of the supply chain, but it keeps the border in it: USMCA rules of origin, IMMEX and customs brokerage, currency exposure, a foreign facility for ITAR and IP purposes, and a management team that crosses at Nogales or El Paso to solve problems. Phoenix is on the same I-10 and I-19 corridor, 180 miles from the crossing, and it is in the United States. For programs with export control, IP sensitivity, tight engineering loops or tariff risk, Arizona is the nearshore option without the border.
- No tariff, duty or rules-of-origin exposure
- US jurisdiction for IP and contracts; ITAR-eligible supply on request
- Engineering changes turned in days, not crossings
- Dollar pricing, no peso exposure
- Same labor-cost advantage over coastal US cities

Transferring tooling from overseas
Most reshoring programs arrive with a tool. Some arrive with a tool that was never built to US standards, or that the overseas molder will not release. We handle both: inspection and process development for tools that travel well, and a re-tooling plan with bridge production for the ones that do not.
- Request the tool drawings, steel certs, cycle count and last-shot samples before it ships
- Confirm ownership and export paperwork in writing
- Plan for a US-standard mold base, water and electrical fittings where needed
- Budget a trial run and first article before production restarts
- Bridge production from an aluminum tool if the transfer tool is late or unusable

Who is reshoring to Arizona
Semiconductor equipment
Programs moving to Arizona with TSMC, Intel and the equipment makers that follow them; ESD-safe and PEEK components molded ten miles from the fab.
Defense electronics
Export-controlled housings and connector bodies pulled back from foreign suppliers after compliance reviews.
Consumer and industrial OEMs
Tariff-exposed housings and assemblies re-tooled in Phoenix with multi-cavity tools to close the piece-price gap.
Frequently asked questions
Is US injection molding really cost competitive with China or Mexico?
On piece price alone, usually not. On landed cost (piece price plus tooling, freight, duty, inventory carrying, quality travel and the cost of a late shipment) programs with engineering resins, moderate volumes or tariff exposure are often cheaper in Phoenix. The worksheet on this page lets you run your own numbers.
How long does it take to move a program?
Two to four weeks from the tool arriving in Phoenix to production parts, if the tool is usable. Re-tooling adds 6 to 12 weeks, with bridge production available in the meantime.
Can you take over a tool the overseas molder built?
Usually. We inspect it, adapt the mold base and fittings to US presses if needed, develop the process and run a first article. If the tool is not fit for production we will say so and quote a replacement.
Do you handle export-controlled work?
Ask us. Export-controlled and defense programs are handled with documented traceability and controlled access to drawings and parts.

Send the part data, current piece price, annual volume and where the tool is today. We will come back with a landed-cost comparison and a transfer plan.
